UPDATE ON GLOBAL GRANT February 2026: 7 now 9 Schools
The Rotary Clubs of Grahamstown and Grahamstown Sunset’s R6.4 million Global Grant is close to completion. Funding for what was the largest Rotary project in Africa was provided by the Rotary Club of Jackson Hole in Wyoming, other Rotary Clubs in the USA and Canada, as well as the Rotary Foundation.
The work of the project allowed the complete refurbishment of the toilets and kitchens at Samuel Ntsiko, Fikizolo, Tantyi and George Dickerson Primary Schools, as well as at Nombulelo and Khutliso Daniels Secondary Schools. Just the kitchen was completely rebuilt at Mary Waters Secondary School.
Savings achieved through bulk buying and careful management of project implementation, together with interest earned on the project’s bank account, allowed upgrades to be extended beyond the initial seven schools to an additional two schools. The Global Grant was able to also fund work on the toilets, kitchen and water tanks at the beautifully restored GADRA Matric School in Gowie Street. This support complemented additional funds raised by the Rotary Club of Jackson Hole for this transformative project.
The final phase of the Global Grant is currently underway. This involves turning classrooms at Andrew Moyake Secondary School into a fully functioning and hygienic kitchen and tuck shop. A serving hatch will allow pupils to receive their meals in a dignified manner, and a storeroom will allow supplies to be kept safely. As has been the case at all the other schools, staff ablutions will also receive attention. Builders have been asked for quotations and work should begin in February.
This will bring the largest project every undertaken by Rotary in Makhanda to an end.
